Cyclically presented groups in which the relators involve at most three generators

چکیده
Cyclically presented groups Gn(w) in which w involves at most three generators are studied. We classify when such groups have infinite abelianizations and apply this result to the groups Gn(x1x1+kx 1+`). As a further corollary we give sufficient conditions for the natural HNN extension of Gn(w) to be a high-dimensional knot group. By continuing Cavicchioli, Repovš, and Spaggiari’s investigations into the asphericity of presentations Gn(x1x1+kx1+`) we determine when they define finite groups.

Coherence, subgroup separability, and metacyclic structures for a class of cyclically presented groups
We study a classM of cyclically presented groups that includes both finite and infinite groups and is defined by a certain combinatorial condition on the defining relations. This class includes many finite metacyclic generalized Fibonacci groups that have been previously identified in the literature. By analysing their shift extensions we show that the groups in the class M are are coherent, su...
متن کاملCyclically Presented Groups and Resultants
We consider the family of irreducible cyclically presented groups on n generators whose generating word (in the standard rewrite) has length at most 15. Using the software packages KBMAG, quotpic and Magma, together with group and number theoretic methods, we show that if 6 ≤ n ≤ 100 then the group is non-trivial. In an appendix we list the 47 cases within 2 ≤ n ≤ 100 for which we know the grou...
متن کاملGROUP PRESENTATIONS CORRESPONDING TO SPINES OF 3 - MANIFOLDS . Ill
Continuing after the previous papers of this series, attention is devoted to RR-systems having two towns (i.e., to compact 3-manifolds with spines corresponding to group presentations having two generators). An interesting kind of symmetry is noted and then used to derive some useful results. Specifically, the following theorems are proved: Theorem 1. Let tf> be a group presentation correspondi...
متن کامل1 3 M ay 1 99 6 Hyperbolic groups and free constructions
Hyperbolic groups have been the subject of intensive investigation since the work of Gromov [8]. Let G =< J, R > be a finitely presented group with a set of generators J and a set of relators R. A word W in the alphabet J ±1 is equal to 1 in G if and only if there is an equality W =
متن کاملUnions of Cockcroft Two-complexes
A combinatorial group-theoretic hypothesis is presented that serves as a necessary and suucient condition for a union of connected Cock-croft two-complexes to be Cockcroft. This hypothesis has a component that can be expressed in terms of the second homology of groups. The hypothesis is applied to the study of the third homology of groups given by generators and relators.
